Produced via powder metallurgy, this is a high-speed steel developed by Bohler Uddeholm for machine cutting tools where excellent wear resistance and edge retention were the primary requirements. This steel can reach a maximum hardness of up to 70 HRC. Its alloy composition includes: Carbon (C ~1.6%), Chromium (Cr ~4.8%), Molybdenum (Mo ~2%), Vanadium (V ~4.7%), Manganese (Mn ~0.3%), Silicon (Si ~0.4%), Cobalt (Co ~8.1%), and Tungsten (W ~10%). Its high cost means S390 is not commonly found in serial production knives, making it a material reserved for premium products.
