Bladed weapon manufacturers in Russia had been trying to uncover the secret technology of producing Asian wootz steel ever since the first pieces of imported weapons made from this material appeared in their lands. It is believed that Pavel Anosov made a breakthrough in these efforts in the first half of the 19th century. Since then, there have been several centers where steel with characteristics close to historical wootz was produced (or, as the Russians say, cast).
