Waryag (9XC steel, black wood handle)
Description
Hand-forged knife made of 9XC tool steel. This steel is used to manufacture metalworking tools such as drills and milling cutters. 9XC is a Russian designation. The number 9 means that the steel contains 0.9% carbon. The letters (of course, in the Cyrillic alphabet) "X" and "C" denote chromium (Cr) and silicon (Si) respectively, of which there is no less than 1.5%. Knives and axes made of this steel appeared on the Russian market relatively recently. These are always forged products, they are not produced by stamping or rolling. To emphasize this, manufacturers almost always leave forging marks on the blades. Knives are hardened to 60-62 HRC, axes to 55-57 HRC.
Wooden handle finished on both sides with nickel silver castings: an ornamental guard and a pommel loop for a lanyard or wrist wrap.
