Spas-1 (leather handle, gilding)
Description
A military-style field knife produced by the Zlatoust company, made from 95x18 steel. The first batch of these knives was custom-made for the Ministry of Emergency Situations (Russian: Министерство Чрезвычайных Ситуаций) – a paramilitary organization responsible for interventions in natural disaster zones, such as earthquakes, floods, etc. Hence, their blades feature the laser-engraved emblems of МЧС России. The blade is straight, massive, with a spear point profile (the spine near the tip is ground to a false edge) and a saw on the back. It has a partial, slightly concave grind. The other side of the blade is decorated with a galvanically gold-plated hunting-themed drawing. The very light handle is made of stacked leather rings, finished with a crossguard on one end and a textolite pommel on the other. At the end of the handle, there is a hole for attaching a lanyard or wrist strap. At the base of the blade, there is the inscription: "Росоружие Златоуст", the manufacturer's logo, and the steel grade designation: 95x18. All models in the Spas series come with very impressive and practical leather sheaths with a frog, allowing for both vertical and horizontal carry. The sheath is equipped with a metal clip which, after removing the frog, allows the knife to be attached, for example, to MOLLE webbing on a backpack or tactical vest.
The Zlatoust company is one of several Russian knife manufacturers widely known outside of Russia. It prides itself on a centuries-old tradition in the production of bladed weapons.
