Zwiadowca NR (walnut burl handle)
Description
This knife is part of a series that reflects a new trend in the Russian field knife market. Replicas of the most popular knives with military origins from the Soviet era are appearing more frequently in Russia. Models such as the NKVD finka, various modifications of the NR (scout knives), or the dual-bladed air force clasp knives are still remembered by all those who completed their compulsory military service before the late 1990s, which is still a significant portion of the male population. Manufacturers are deliberately drawing on these blade and handle shapes, which evoke nostalgic associations with the Soviet empire era. This also explains the appearance of communist symbols on the handles, which, in reality, were not even placed there during the communist period.
In this knife from the Siomin company, the blade, with its characteristic clipped point profile, is reminiscent of the original NR. It has been made "slimmer" compared to the original (shorter and thinner) to avoid being classified as a melee weapon, which in the Russian Federation would require a permit. It features a high hollow grind. The blade is made of pattern-welded Damascus steel. The ascetic and rather crude handle of the military originals has been replaced with a more elegant and ergonomic one, similar to the handle of the famous NKVD finkas, with the addition of Soviet symbols (a star and the USSR coat of arms on the fittings). It has an S-shaped double guard. The sheath is made of smooth leather with a silent snap closure.
