Wolf (laminate, stabilized karelian birch, mammoth tooth)
Description
A beautiful knife with a laminated blade from Leonid Vasiliev workshop. He is a well known, valued, and repeatedly awarded blacksmith and knifemaker from Pavlovo on the Oka river, recognized at industry exhibitions. He specializes in labor intensive and complex mosaic and multilayered laminated blades. As with other high end blacksmiths, his blades are sometimes used by other manufacturers, even those with an established market position.
The core, or central layer, is 9HF carbon steel (Russian 9ХФ, an instrumental steel containing 0.9% carbon as well as vanadium and chromium as alloying additives). Despite its chromium content, 9HF is not stainless (there is simply not enough chromium - 0.4-0.7%). Its hardness is 60-62 HRC. The claddings on both sides are a forge welded damascus package with copper and nickel (white and red "snakes"). The grind is a partial hollow grind. The bolster was made using the Japanese mokume gane technique, in which different metals are combined to create a decorative pattern, in this specific case copper and nickel. The handle is made of stabilized Karelian birch with a mammoth tooth insert. The leather sheath features a colorful embossed drawing.
