Leuku finka small (stabilized karelian birch handle)
Description
Leuku are traditional knives from the northern parts of Finland, Sweden and Norway. Like true Leuku knives from centuries ago, it is hand-forged from a bundle of corrosive carbon steels without alloying additions. The blades have a characteristic profile: a straight back, completely without a drop (or with a minimal drop) at the end, sometimes with a slight widening towards the blade at the tang, which provides better cutting when pulling the knife towards oneself. The blade itself is quite massive, made of very good quality damask steel, with a bolster. Partially concave grind. The manufacturer's monogram and the inscription: "ОКСКИЕ НОЖИ ДАМАССКАЯ СТАЛЬ" are engraved on the blade under the handle. Duralumin bolster.
The handle is made of stabilized Karelian birch – one of the more expensive types of stabilized wood. A selected piece of wood undergoes processing, the exact process of which is a secret of each manufacturer. As a result, the handles are given an unnatural color, emphasizing the unique grain pattern. In addition to their aesthetic value, these handles have the advantage of being completely waterproof.
The lack of a guard is intriguing; perhaps this is a feature of knives of all northern peoples – in this respect, Scandinavian puukkos are very similar to Yakut knives.
