Baikal D2 (walnut handle)
Description
The first Baikal premiered in 2020. It was advertised as a knife produced by Kizlyar Supreme, allegedly designed by the Kalashnikov Concern. I say allegedly because it is likely a joint marketing project where Kizlyar Supreme contributes the product itself and Kalashnikov lends its brand name. Whatever the case, the knife turned out quite well: a reasonably sized blade with a high grind and a swedge reminiscent of a saber's clip point. Like most Kizlyar Supreme knives, the Baikal is a full tang construction. In this version, the handle scales are made of walnut. The scales feature checkering for an improved grip, similar to the checkering on rifle stocks. The blade is made of D2 steel with a stone wash finish. It comes with a black leather sheath.
The Dagestani company Kizlyar Supreme (not to be confused with Kizlyar, also from Dagestan) is one of several Russian knife manufacturers widely known outside of Russia. Kizlyar Supreme focuses on combining the old traditions of Caucasian knife makers with the latest production technologies. Kizlyar Supreme products are the result of the manual work of craftsmen who have been making knives for generations, except today they have the most modern programmable machining centers and hardening furnaces at their disposal.
