The NKVD Finka is a legendary Soviet knife that originated in the mid-1930s. In 1935, a new model of knife, manufactured at the "Trud" plant, began to be issued to the NKVD's operational officers. Its distinctive features are a straight spine with a slight drop at the point, a double-sided guard (sometimes S-shaped), a straight fuller (or "blood groove"), and a ricasso—an unsharpened section of the blade just in front of the guard that enables a forward grip. The knife was exceptionally successful, perfectly sized, and served as a symbol of membership in a privileged class, especially as the USSR was simultaneously enacting laws that prohibited the manufacturing, carrying, and ownership of "finka" knives. It was mass-produced until the end of the 1970s and was known by nearly every man in the Soviet Union who had served their mandatory military duty. Aside from the official-issue NKVD Finka, dozens of clones were produced, including a folding variant that was never formally adopted as service equipment.
