1085 steel is a high-carbon, non-alloy steel, meaning it contains a limited amount of impurities with no deliberately added alloying elements. 1085 contains approximately 0.85% carbon, is characterized by very good impact resistance, strength, and ease of sharpening, and it generally holds an edge well. However, it requires constant care because it is very susceptible to corrosion. It is often used for knives that are replicas of historical models from a period when alloying additives were not used in metallurgy.
