The History of Knife Production in the Pavlovsky District of the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate. The First Three Decades of the 20th Century (book in Russian)
Description
A very rare study on knife production in one of Russia's most important manufacturing centers for this type of product. Besides information on the organization of production (forms of ownership, technologies, materials) during the Soviet era, it also contains data on manufacturers from this region from an earlier period. The manufacturers' marks may be of particular interest. You can find this title, as well as a wide range of literature in Russian (including topics on general survival, edged weapons, and military equipment and symbolism) at www.knigi.pl
Original publisher's note: Contains information on the history of knife production in the Pavlovsky steel and cutlery district in the first third of the 20th century. Special attention is given to the history of the village of Pavlovo in 1917, as well as during the periods of war communism and the new economic policy – issues of enterprise nationalization (including events at the factories of V.M. Terebin and I.I. Pukhov), the formation of industrial management bodies (including the creation and activities of the "Prodrasmet" agency in Pavlovo, the first department of the Nizhny Novgorod Provincial Council of National Economy, PRUMP), and the development of state, artel, and artisan forms of knife production. It provides data on the materials used for knife making, descriptions of production technology, its specifics, product assortments, and numerous illustrations.
The book uses archival documents about knife-making masters and knife production, including supplemented indexes from all-Russian artisan exhibitions from the period before 1917, data from the Pavlovsky district financial department (over 450 patents for knife production), and materials from the 1929 census of private production in the town of Pavlovo and its district. Based on these, a reference material on knife makers has been prepared (over 2,500 surnames). It also includes data on knife output by artels and industrial collective farms (about 30 enterprises) in the 1930s.
